Installation Instructions

Basic Installation

For the most part, Macabacus installs just like any other Windows software. However, if you are having problems with installation, please follow the steps below carefully.

1. Sign into Windows as the end user

Sign into Windows as the end user, not an administrator (unless the administrator is the end user), before installing Macabacus.

2. Download the installer

Download the installer named Macabacus20XX.exe. Verify that this file name corresponds to the Office version installed on your PC. For Microsoft 365 and Office 2019 installations, the installer will be named Macabacus2016.exe.

3. Run the installer

Run the installer. Request IT support for an "over-the-shoulder" installation if you do not have privileges to install software on your PC. Do not attempt to manually load the installer (.exe file) as an add-in in your Office applications via the native COM Add-ins or Add-ins dialogs.


The following Microsoft components (prerequisites) are required by Macabacus. If the installer cannot download or install a missing prerequisite for any reason, download it directly from Microsoft using the applicable link below and install it.

Microsoft .NET Framework (version 4.5 or later)
Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office (VSTO) Runtime

Full Office installation required

The full edition of Microsoft Office must be installed to support sophisticated VSTO add-ins like Macabacus. See our troubleshooting guide if the installer informs you that Office 2016 is not installed.

4. Sign out of Windows, if necessary

If an administrator performed an "over-the-shoulder" installation, sign out of Windows to complete the installation.

5. Activate or evaluate

Macabacus may prompt you for an email address upon starting Excel, PowerPoint, or Word. Enter either (a) the email address of an authorized user to activate Macabacus, if you have already purchased a subscription, or (b) the email address you expect to use to manage your subscription if you later decide to purchase Macabacus to initiate your free trial.

You can activate Macabacus at any time using these instructions. If you are a corporate user and your email address is not recognized when you try to activate, ask your Macabacus account administrator to configure your access.

Software Updates

Complete steps 1-4 above to update Macabacus software. You do not need to uninstall your current Macabacus version before installing updates—the newer version will overwrite the older version.

Enterprise Deployment

Extract MSI file from EXE installer

If you require the .msi file packaged in the .exe installer, perhaps for silent installs, follow these instructions:

  1. Run the .exe installer.
  2. When the installer dialog appears, do not click anything in this dialog and do not close it.
  3. In Windows Explorer, type %temp% in the address bar and hit Enter.
  4. Sort files in the Temp folder by the modification date. The newest folder there is named in the format {XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-...} and contains the Macabacus 20XX.msi file you are looking for.
  5. Copy the .msi file to another location before closing the installer dialog.
  6. Click the Cancel button in the installer dialog. The .msi will be immediately deleted from the Temp folder.

There are also other methods to extract the .msi, including third party software and Windows' command line prompt.

Citrix / Terminal Server Environments

When you install Macabacus, the registry keys that instruct Office applications to load Macabacus add-ins upon start-up are created under your HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive at:


If you log out of the Citrix "box" and then log in as another user, Macabacus should still be installed. However, the necessary registry keys will likely be missing from that user's HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive, and Macabacus add-ins will not load for that user. Therefore, when deploying Macabacus in a terminal server environment, ensure that Macabacus is installed in the logon script, or otherwise ensure that the necessary registry keys are present in the user's HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive.

Symantec Endpoint Protection

When Symantec Endpoint Protection ("SEP") blocks installation of legitimate software, Symantec calls this a "false positive." Symantec customers should report false positives at and contact Symantec for futher assistance with installing Macabacus and/or disable or relax SEP restrictions. There is nothing wrong with Macabacus or its installer, and we have no control over the quality of SEP.


Uninstall Macabacus via Windows' Control Panel just as you would any other Windows software. To support updating your Macabacus software without losing your settings, uninstalling does not remove the folder C:\Users\%USER NAME%\AppData\Roaming\Macabacus and certain registry entries (e.g., HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macabacus). Remove these items manually, if desired.

After uninstalling Macabacus, you may receive a message upon starting Excel that Macabacus.xlam could not be found. This is because Excel remembers that Macabacus.xlam was loaded when Excel was last open, and now Excel cannot find it. To resolve this, open Excel's Add-Ins dialog and select the "Macabacus" item. When prompted to remove Macabacus, click Yes. You should no longer receive this message after restarting Excel. However, if you do continue to receive this error, either (a) run Excel as administrator (even if you are a Windows admin), remove the "Macabacus" item in the Add-Ins dialog, and restart Excel; or (b) open Registry Editor and remove references to "Macabacus.xlam" then restart Excel.

This documentation refers to Macabacus version 9.4.5. Some features and descriptions of these features may not
apply to older versions of Macabacus. Update your Macabacus software to take advantage of the latest features.
